Gender equality

Today we are going to start a new theme which will last two weeks.

It is the theme of gender equality.'

We start off today and Tuesday by looking at a film which deals with this issue.

The film is "Philadelphia" from 1993 starring Tom Hanks.

Here are some study questions which we will discuss after the film on Tuesday and next Friday..

Philadelphia Movie Questions
Based on the movie Philadelphia that we watched in class answer the following questions.

  1. What was the workplace environment like before Andrew’s bosses found out that he had AIDS?

  1. What was the workplace environment like after Andrew’s bosses found out that he had AIDS?  Would you call this a poisonous environment?  Why or why not?

  1. What were the prohibited grounds for discrimination in the case portrayed in the movie?

  1. Why did Joe agree to take Andrew’s case after first refusing to do so?

  1. Why was the woman with AIDS not fired like Andrew was?

  1. What do you think would have happened if something like this had occurred in Sweden?

  1. Were there subjects that were brought up in the trial that did not seem
relevant to the main issue, which was why Andy was fired?

  1. Because Beckett has AIDs, is it his responsibility to inform and educate his coworkers about his condition? Should he attempt to make them feel more comfortable with it? On the other hand, is it morally OK for him to keep his condition secret?

  1. Miller overcomes his homophobia as well as his fear of contracting AIDS from Beckett. Miller sees Beckett as a regular man and even befriends him. Is ignorance an excuse for Miller’s intolerance, or were his values askew? Can someone’s moral values truly change?
Let's watch it now!
